Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District Signs Federal Contract

On Friday, January 11 Key Largo, Key Colony Beach, and Key West signed contracts with the Corps of Engineers for future federal funds. “It has been a long time coming but worth the effort, said Gary Bauman Chairman of the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment Board, now that the Project Corporative Agreements (PCA) have been signed we can begin receiving federal funds.”

The process started approximately 7 years ago when Congress passed an authorization for $100 million to be spent on the Florida Keys Water Quality Improvement Project through the assistance of the Corps of Engineers.  Numerous scientific and environmental studies have been made to justify the use of federal funds on wastewater treatment projects in the Keys. The goal is to restore and protect the near shore waters of the State of Florida and the National Marine Sanctuary.

“A lot of credit is due to Congresswomen Ileana Ross Lehtinen and her staff for their help in this process.  We have had numerous Board members and staff go to Washington, DC to have meetings with the Her staff and the Corps of Engineers Headquarters”, said Gary Bauman. The Congresswoman arranged to have Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works, John Paul Woodley attend the signing ceremony at the Key West Eco Center on Friday.

“With the completed contract we should be receiving approximately $1.1 million in the next 30 to 60 days.” Our Board has always been concerned about the cost of the wastewater treatment system to our property owners in the Key Largo District.  Our goal is to get as much Federal and State funds as we can to ease the financial burden. It is our hope that the Governor, Senator Martinez, Senator Nelson, and Congresswoman Ileana Ross Lehtinen will be able to get us more funds in 2009.”
